Let’s dig deep, write freely and reflect boldly.

Episode 10, Shannon’s Supply Run.

So today’s podcast is gonna be a little more chit chat and style because we’re gonna talk about my recent supply run that I just did. And we’re also gonna talk about some of my favorite supplies that I use, like journals and pens, but I figured it’s been a minute. Actually, I don’t think we’ve done a supply run yet, so it’s about time that we do a supply run, so let’s get into it.

For me, the supply I needed was actually a new journal. I’m doing two things at once. One, I did a journal run for myself, and then I also did a supply run for a family member who wants to get into journaling. So I kind of am putting together a like starting kit. It’ll be kind of fun for me. I have most of my basics, but my journal that I’ve been writing in and the one you’ve heard me flip through in recent episodes only has about 10 pages left, so it’s time for a new one. I am changing journals. I haven’t done this in a while, but I am going to try a new journal.

A new journal

I plan on trying the Lechtturm. I’m probably not saying that right, classic notebook. It has like a hardcover, a higher weight paper, and it is also got like a date marker at the top of the page for me, which is gonna be very helpful ’cause I do date my journal entries. So I wanted to give it a try as my new one. So we’re gonna give that one a try. It does come in a bunch of colors and a bunch of sizes. It also has a soft cover option, but personally I prefer. A hardcover. I’ve done soft covers in the past. I just put way too much wear and tear on them. So hard cover for life. That’s probably gonna be the one thing that I’d never change.

What I am excited for is this one has two ribbons. Um, I like having like a little ribbon bookmark put in there to mark where I’m at. But I think this will also help me because I wanna put a ribbon. Where my like monthly goal trackers are at the beginning of each month.

What I’m currently doing

Currently what I’m using is like a little pen wraparound and I use that to mark the beginning of the month, but it does a lot of damage to the spine of the journal and kind of makes it really loose, and I’m afraid I will eventually. Start to lose pages. So having a second ribbon I think is gonna be very helpful for me. Now, the journal I bought a family member is more my traditional journal, the one that I’ve been using for like I think two years now, which is a paper age lined journal. It comes with one ribbon, the elastic closure.

It is a hardcover journal as well. I have like 10 of these. I’ve used a whole bunch of them. They come in a bunch of different colors. They come lined, dotted, uh, I believe they even have like a blank page one, and they have some that are like spiral bound, some that are traditionally bound, all kinds of really good sets.

Paperage new things

And I think, think they’re starting to come out with a soft cover. If I saw that Instagram post. Like two weeks ago announcing it, but I don’t know if it’s out yet, but that would be something to keep your eye on.

I will say the downside to paper age is you can only get them on Amazon. They don’t currently sell them on their own website or anywhere else that I’m aware of. Um, but hopefully they expand soon. I’d love to see, uh. Them kind of start to sell on their own website and hopefully expand into other markets.

Pens

I did also need some new pens. I use a lot of gel pens along with a fountain pen in my journal. Just kind of like keeping things color coded. I like the jelly roll by the Sakura.

Yeah, by the Sakura of America Company. Those pens have been my tried and true since I started journaling. Great color payout. Even the glitters roll smooth. I don’t tend to have any issues with them, and they last a good while for a gel pen. They are a bit price, I’m not gonna lie to you. They average about $2 per pen, which I know for a gel pen can be a lot, but I find the quality and how long they last for me to be worth it, and I only keep about maybe, 10 on hand.

So it’s not like I have their entire collection available to me, and I did get a few of these for that family member that I’m making a journal kit. They will also have a few, I got them like the gold shimmer one. I got them a red, a blue, a green, purple, and I think, a like a regular black, I don’t think I got them the glitter black, but like just got ’em, a couple of them.

Fountain Pens

We have a store nearby that you can buy them individually at. So I did go ahead and do that. Thankfully I’m not out of ink for my fountain pen, but I do use the TWSBI Eco. Yeah, it’s the TWSBI Eco. I have lots of ink, so I didn’t need to get any ink at the moment. I also just got one of my Kickstarter inks from Ferris Press.

That is really cute and I’m probably gonna fill up with that ’cause that green is so pretty and the shimmer is really great on it. Should be set on that for me. I did not get this family member a fountain pen. It’s not quite their style, but I did get them. They’re kind of like mock fountain pens. They’re not refillable or anything like that.

Kind of like a, a one-time pen type deal. Got ’em. A couple of those in case they wanted to try ’em, but I don’t think it’ll be their, their style. They prefer the, like sharpie pens and things of those nature, very much like a. Uni ball style pen. So I don’t think they’re gonna enjoy these, but I did want to give them one or two just to give a, a like shot at it. So they got a couple of those.

STICKERS!!!

And then next, one of my favorite areas to shop because I am a girly that loves some stickers, is I’m getting them sticker sets and washy tapes, and I. Might buy from some of my favorite stores from them. Usually when I’m starting somebody out, I try to go with some of the lower end ones, but I currently see a collection on the washy tape shop that I think this family member would absolutely adore, and I know it’s a little pricey.

It’s like $25, but there’s a whole bunch of stuff in it, and I think they’re gonna get a lot of use out of it. So, thinking I might splurge and get them that. The other place I might splurge for, ’cause they have a sale going on is Soto Studios. I adore their sticker sheets. Great quality, very reasonable price. Some of them are even gilded, so like you get little gold or silver accents and they have a massive variety.

Tips

I will say. Don’t shop the US only store, shop, their global store. The global store has a much higher variety. But you do wanna buy more to get the free shipping because I think it’s like 60 or 65 for the free shipping depending on where in the world you are located.

So kind of pay attention to that and also. They do freebies with like large orders. There’s kinda some awesome stuff in there for it. So I’ll probably get the some stuff from there.

Budget Friendly

And then I know they’re not the greatest company and they’re not my favorite and I don’t shop there very often, but Shein and is a kind of drop shipping company, not known for their greatness.

But they do keep a lot of stickers on hand. So if you’re looking for a quick, easy budget friendly way, and you’re willing to wait a little while for the shipping, they’re also really great. And I know a lot of people also will get their washy tapes from Amazon, and a lot of stores that have like a stationary section will have things like stickers and washy tapes for journals.

They’re just not gonna have a wide selection. And for me, when I’m shopping online, that’s one of the things I do look for is that bigger selection is kind of getting a variety. ’cause I wanna buy a big bulk thing, get it sorted out, and then be set for like several months.

Example

So like recently I bought a planner for next year, hopefully, to help me keep track of all the things I’m doing for this podcast.

And I bought the stickers. I know I’m gonna want for it. I bought like a little like clip in ruler to take with me and a little clip in bookmark. That way I could have all of those where I needed them right away. Kind of bought it all at once. Got it all at once. It’s sat, it’s ready to go. So on the 1st of January, I can pick it up and I’m ready to roll.

And I kind of do the same with my journal, like my new one that I’ve just got. I’ve already set up the front pages with my major like overarching goals. So like my savings goal, my. Big walk challenge that I’m doing. I’m doing the walk tomorrow, so we’re gonna try that out. That is listed in there. I’ve got it broken down by miles. A lot of fun stuff is in there already. And alls I gotta do is the second I finish my current journal is roll right into the new one. Um, kind of a get it prepped and ready in advance type.

Getting Someone Started

I’m just super excited to get this family member. Started on their journaling adventure. So I guess my big takeaway from this episode would be if you’re starting, you don’t need a lot of supplies, but also don’t be afraid to have a little bit of fun with it.

I know all you need is a journal or an app and a pen. But don’t hesitate to go get a few stickers to kind of decorate your pages. Or I have little scrapbook papers that I glue in or tape in on occasion, a little bit of washy tape for a border is never gonna hurt. Have fun with it, figure out what does and doesn’t work for you. And if something doesn’t work, that’s okay.

So I’m gonna put a bunch of stuff in a gift basket for this family member. I have the journal. I have some gel pens, some regular pens. I’m gonna get them some washy tape, some stickers, probably a pair of small scissors that they can keep handy, a ruler and maybe some stencils for basic shapes like circle squares, triangles, just so that way if they wanna make like little list, they have those handy.

I know its a lot

And I’ll be honest, that’s a really big starting set and it’s not what you need, but I’m in a place currently where I can afford to kind of splurge when setting somebody up, and I’m kind of excited to do it. (Also super grateful to be able to do this.)

As always, I’ll have links to everything I’ve talked about down below, and if you have suggestions for things I should include in their little gift basket, drop those in the comments.I’m absolutely gonna be checking through and seeing if anyone has any. Extras they think I should add. Um, and if you have questions about any of the supplies, let me know. Shoot me a message probably on Instagram. I don’t think Spotify’s letting me get messages, but definitely reach out and I’ll do my best to help you out and get you all set up.
